Preparing for Citizenship test and INS interview
 

An applicant for naturalization must demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of the history and of the principles and form of government of the United States. Also, you must be able to read, write, and speak basic English.

Applicants exempt from this requirement are those who, on the date of filing, have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment, where the impairment affects the applicant’s ability to learn U.S. History and Government.

Applicants who have been residing in the U.S. subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for at least 20 years and are over the age of 65 will be afforded special condsideration in satisfying this requirement.

Following information is to test of your knowledge of United States History and the structure of US government. This is not the actual test that you will be given by an INS Officer. It is designed to be used as a study guide only. The questions on this page are examples of the types of questions an INS officer may ask you. At your interview, the INS Officer will ask you similar questions in an oral format. You will also be evaluated on your ability to speak, read, write, and understand English at your interview.

**Note:  This are not an exhaustive list of questions. The INS officer who interviews you may ask other questions.
